Alliance Medical Ministry is a faith-led medical ministry serving working uninsured adults in Wake County in need of affordable, quality healthcare. The average Alliance patient is an adult female who supports a household of three people on $19,907 a year, living at approximately 111% of the Federal Poverty Guideline. Alliance patients are uninsured -- no Medicare, Medicaid or health insurance -- and frequent visitors of local emergency departments for primary care. Fifty-five percent of Alliance patients suffer from two or more chronic illnesses: 55% suffer from diabetes, 48% are overweight, obese or morbidly obese, 46% are hypertensive, and 23% are dealing with respiratory issues.
With the help of our donors, Alliance achieved about 12,000 patient visits in 2015, including primary care and specialty care appointments, pastoral care and counseling sessions, and lab work. Thanks to the Rex Foundation, 219 women received mammograms in 2015 from the Rex Foundation's Mobile Mammography Unit. We distributed over 4,000 pounds of fresh produce to patients -- 2,000 pounds harvested from our Community Garden, and over 2,000 pounds from outside sources. Alliance offers a comprehensive Wellness Program to help our patients monitor their chronic diseases and improve their health outcomes: diabetes education, diabetes prevention programming, a walking program, weekly yoga, gardening education, and cooking and nutrition classes.
The results are in! Alliance patients are making fewer visits to the Emergency Room and seeking care when they otherwise would not. A1Cs are decreasing, blood pressure is going down, and weight is being lost. Our patients are missing fewer days of work, and report feeling better as a result of the care they receive at Alliance.
