Flor’s Story
A few years ago, Flor walked into the emergency room, desperate for relief from back pain. When asked if she had a primary care physician, she shared “I can’t afford one.” For years, Flor could only pay for routine Pap smears, but nothing else.
Flor worked tirelessly to provide for her children. However, taking care of herself was a challenge because she had no insurance and was not eligible for Medicaid. For years, she had no idea that she was battling pre-diabetes and high cholesterol—conditions that went undetected and untreated.
That all changed when Flor was referred to Alliance Medical Ministry (AMM). Her providers quickly discovered her health issues and began working with her to take control. Through AMM’s patient assistance programs, Flor gained access to medications she couldn’t afford on her own. Her primary care provider took a holistic approach to her care and referred her to AMM’s Head of Farming and Wellness, where she joined the Million Step Challenge, a no-cost wellness program.
Flor didn’t just participate—she thrived. As one of the highest-achieving participants, Flor used her YMCA membership prize to commit to exercising twice a week. Today, she’s not only feeling healthier but also actively lowering her cholesterol. Through determination and the support of AMM, Flor has taken charge of her health, proving that with the right care, anything is possible.
