Keynote Speaker

Dr. Joel Lutterman, Medical Director for Wake County Health and Human Services Public Health Division

Dr. Joel Lutterman serves as Medical Director for Wake County Health and Human Services Public Health Division where, among his responsibilities, is the care for the under and uninsured residents of Wake County.   He attended Brandeis University, Boston University School of Medicine and completed a pediatric residency at Brown University’s Hasbro Children’s Hospital and a pediatric fellowship at Harvard medical School . His career has taken him to Boston Children’s Hospital and St Jude’s Childrens Hospital in Memphis.  Dr. Lutterman worked in Charlotte for the International Children’s Heart Foundation and led more than 20 heart brigades to Honduras and Guyana – working with children who had no access to medical care. His medical curiosity is not limited to just humans as he has done extensive research on horseshoe crab photoreceptors and reward behavior on rats.  Dr. Lutterman moved to Raleigh 4 years ago and served as the Executive Medical Director at Advance Community Health.  He serves on the board of RightCare, helping to connect uninsured patients with both primary care and subspecialty clinicians.   He is the current Medical Director for Wake County Health and Human Services Public Health Division where he oversees the clinical programs in pediatrics, HIV and Sexually Transmitted Illness, Prenatal and Obstetric Care as well as Immunization and WIC programs with a focus on providing care for the under and uninsured patients of Wake County.  In his spare time Dr. Lutterman is an avid road and mountain bike rider and spends the rest of his time honing his skills as a pizzaiolo. He is married to Leona Miller, a Family Doctor and practice owner at Avance Care in midtown Raleigh.  Their three grown children all live in Brooklyn, none successfully recruited to become doctors.
