Meet Mackenzie- Social Work Intern

Mackenzie is AMM's current Social Work Intern for the 2025-2026 academic year. She reports to Nick, our Director of Social Work Services. Not many free and charitable clinics have a social worker who is embedded in the clinic. Mackenzie is over halfway through her time with AMM, so we asked her some questions about Social Work and her experience at AMM.

Why I Chose Social Work

I chose social work because I grew up in a rural community with a significant shortage of resources and access to care. Witnessing these gaps firsthand inspired me to become an advocate for vulnerable populations. I developed a strong desire to help individuals and families navigate systemic barriers and access the support they need to improve their overall well-being.

Why I Chose Alliance Medical Ministry

The year prior to my internship, I volunteered in the garden at Alliance Medical Ministry. Through that experience, I developed a deep appreciation for the organization’s mission and its commitment to serving underserved populations. I have always admired Alliance’s dedication to providing comprehensive care to individuals who might otherwise go without essential medical and supportive services, which made it an ideal setting for my internship.

Responsibilities

As a social work intern, my responsibilities include working directly with patients to complete Social Determinants of Health assessments and connecting them with community resources that can help address immediate and long-term needs. This involves identifying barriers related to housing, food security, transportation, employment, healthcare access, and providing appropriate referrals to support stabilization and improved quality of life.

What I Have Learned

During my time at Alliance Medical Ministry, I have significantly expanded my knowledge of community resources within Wake County. The organization serves as a rich and diverse environment, representing a variety of cultures and backgrounds. This has provided me with valuable opportunities to practice cultural humility, ask thoughtful questions, and grow in my ability to provide culturally responsive care.

After Graduation

Following graduation, I plan to continue utilizing the experiences gained through my internship, academic training, and professional opportunities to guide my decision regarding which social work discipline best aligns with my strengths and long-term career goals
