Dear Friend,
North Carolina’s health sector is facing a critical turning point. With the loss of ACA subsidies, roughly 214,000 residents are losing their insurance this year—a 22% decrease that represents the largest enrollment drop in the country. This influx of uninsured people adds to the nearly one million North Carolinians already without coverage, dramatically increasing the burden on our state's struggling safety net providers.
At AMM, we execute on our mission and vision each day and work towards providing healthcare to all who need it. Either we are going to provide it, or people are going to go to the ER for healthcare coverage. The ER is the very last place you want to go for your personal healthcare.
Shaping the next generation of healthcare providers is a critical aspect of working at AMM. Our staff really enjoys having motivated, empathetic, and interested volunteers. Just this week, 3 volunteers started with us – including a First Year UNC School of Medicine student who is doing a rotation through AMM. Later this year, we will have several Kenan Urban Scholars come through for extended periods of time. And at the same time, we have 3 Medical Assistants leaving us to go to grad school – one to become a PA, the other 2 to receive MPH degrees from UNC. We are really proud to help shape the mindset of the next generation, as access to healthcare is going to remain one of the top issues facing our community.
None of this is possible without your ongoing support. So we want to thank you for allowing us to take care of our most underserved neighbors.
Sincerely,
Pete Tannenbaum,
AMM Executive Director

Did you know...
"As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. Some women having a heart attack describe upper back pressure that feels like squeezing or a rope being tied around them. Additional symptoms may include:
- Shortness of breath
- Upset stomach
- Pain in the shoulder, back, or arm
- Unusual tiredness and weakness"
This fact comes from the American Heart Association.

Food Smarts
Throughout this month, patients have been learning how to use food as medicine through the Food Smarts nutrition and cooking classes. The classes last for five weeks and are taught in partnership with Inter-Faith Food Shuttle. Each week, patients learn about a nutrition topic, such as fiber, protein, or reading nutrition labels, and then cook a new healthy recipe to go with the lesson.

Preparing for Spring
We’re getting ready for spring in the AMM garden! Pictured here are our veggie transplants, which we’ve started under grow lights inside the clinic. This allows the veggies to get a head start in a warm, controlled environment before going into the ground in the coming weeks and months. Some of the plants that are sprouting up right now include a variety of peppers, Sungold tomatoes, chard, dill, and more!
