March Pulse: AMM by the Numbers

March 2026

Dear Friend,

I thought I would share some data which really speaks to the value AMM brings to our community. AMM is a member of the North Carolina Association of Free and Charitable Clinics - a group of about 70 clinics across the state. Each year, we report the results of our clinic operations and the impact we have made on the community. Happy to share our 2025 impact.

In 2025:
  • AMM provided medical care valued at $25.4 million to our poorest and most vulnerable neighbors. This includes the value of care we provide, the value of care from partners like RightCare for specialty care, and WakeSmiles for dental care.
  • We saved the hospital systems $12.1 million in prevented visits to the emergency room - the last place you want to go for basic medical care. This does not include the millions in prevented hospitalizations.
  • Our volunteers provided 3,206 hours of service to our clinic and to our garden.

At a for-profit medical clinic where you or I might go, a provider can see up to 30 people in a single day. AMM providers see 12 to 14, allowing time to care for patients with more complex needs. We don’t bill insurance or accept Medicaid—everything we do is made possible through community support and philanthropy.

In 2025, for every $1 you contributed, we provided $7.45 in care to our most vulnerable neighbors - most of whom have diabetes and other chronic conditions - and all of whom are poor. Another way to look at it is that for every visit a person makes to the ER, we can provide about 30 patient encounters. The multiplier effect is huge—dollars invested at AMM stretch far beyond what the same dollars can achieve in the ER, creating a healthier community.

This work is only possible through generous support. As the medical safety net continues to face challenges with Medicaid and funding, we ask you to consider making a gift to AMM to support low-income members of our community.

Sincerely,

Pete Tannenbaum,
AMM Executive Director

Mackenzie-Social Work Intern

Mackenzie is AMM's current Social Work Intern for the 2025-2026 academic year. She reports to Nick, our Director of Social Work Services. Not many free and charitable clinics have a social worker who is embedded in the clinic. Mackenzie is over halfway through her time with AMM, so we asked her some questions about Social Work and her experience at AMM.

Why did you choose Social Work?

"I chose social work because I grew up in a rural community with a significant shortage of resources and access to care. Witnessing these gaps firsthand inspired me to become an advocate for vulnerable populations. I developed a strong desire to help individuals and families navigate systemic barriers and access the support they need to improve their overall well-being."

What do you do as a part of your internship at AMM?

"As a social work intern, my responsibilities include working directly with patients to complete Social Determinants of Health assessments and connecting them with community resources that can help address immediate and long-term needs. This involves identifying barriers related to housing, food security, transportation, employment, and healthcare access, and providing appropriate referrals to support stabilization and improved quality of life."

Caring for Our Community, April 22nd

Access to healthcare continues to be one of our community's biggest issues. Developing a workforce that has the ability to address both the medical and human needs of our communities' most vulnerable populations is a challenge we are committed to tackling. We are honored that UNC Chancellor Lee Roberts will be our keynote speaker.  Join us on April 22nd for this great event.
