May Pulse: More Than A Diagnosis

May 2026

Dear Friend,

Visiting Alliance Medical Ministry is not like visiting your primary care provider. AMM provides holistic care for patients whose health issues extend well beyond the exam room.

“Whole-person” care really means seeing each person as more than a diagnosis. At Alliance Medical Ministry, patients arrive not only with medical concerns but also with housing instability, financial stress, anxiety or depression, and the heavy demands of caring for loved ones. Our teams listen first, learning about the complex realities that affect health—transportation barriers, food insecurity, language needs, legal concerns—and recognize that clinical treatment must be paired with practical, compassionate support.

That is why AMM’s model of care is intentionally holistic. Alongside medical visits, patients have access to counseling, wellness support, and both a social worker and a community health worker who help bridge the gap between healthcare and everyday life.

We are able to do this because of you. Since AMM does not take any form of health insurance, Medicaid, or any reimbursement, we rely on community support to ensure our neighbors continue receiving comprehensive healthcare.

We ask that you consider a gift. I promise it will make a difference. For every dollar donated, we will provide $7.45 in medical care to neighbors who have no healthcare options other than visiting an emergency room.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Pete Tannenbaum,
AMM Executive Director

An Update on Taya, Kenan Urban Scholar

Last June, you all met Taya, one of AMM's Kenan Urban Scholars. During her time at AMM, she focused on improving AMM’s referral process to nephrologists while shadowing Dr. Burkett. To read her interview from last year, click here.

Since then, Taya has finished preclinical classes at the UNC School of Medicine, taken the first board exam in medical training, and has started year three of medical school. Taya has also had the amazing opportunity to present her research from her time at AMM at the 2026 National Kidney Foundation Spring Clinicals in New Orleans, Louisiana, as well as have her abstract published in the May Issue of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases.

Mayor of Raleigh

AMM was honored to be paid a visit by Janet Cowell, the Mayor of Raleigh. During her visit, she toured the clinic and spoke to some of the clinic staff about healthcare in Wake County.

Bloom & Zoom

AMM staff and patients participated in the Bloom & Zoom 5k and 8k races! It was a fun day of running, walking with friends, and supporting AMM. Part of the funds raised through the race will go to AMM and multiple other charities.

Garden Volunteers

Garden volunteer groups are in full swing here at AMM. So far, there have been 6 volunteer groups, with over 3 dozen volunteers among them. Garden volunteers play an integral part in garden prep, planting, and harvesting.

If you are interested in volunteering in the garden, fill out the interest form here.

Mental Health

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a period devoted to promoting mental health, eradicating stigma, and providing support. This month is good opportunity to acknowledge the importance of taking care of ourselves and others, to acknowledge the significance of mental health, and to normalize honest conversations about mental health.
