May is Mental Health Month, and what better way to honor than to introduce you to AMM’s ‘23-’24 Mental Health Counseling Intern, Maylin.
Why did you choose mental health counseling?
I chose mental health counseling because I am passionate about advocacy, social justice, and empowering clients to find their voice and recognize their inner strength. Growing up, I witnessed how much mental health can impact individuals, families, and entire communities. I knew I wanted to be someone who could walk alongside individuals in their healing journeys, holding space for them with empathy, understanding, and respect. Counseling has given me the opportunity to empower individuals, to heal in their own time, and to reconnect with the beautiful parts of themselves that may have been forgotten along the way.
Why did you choose AMM?
I chose AMM because of its mission and heart. I wanted to be in a place where patients are treated with dignity, respect, and true compassion. From the moment I learned about AMM, I could feel the genuine dedication to the community, especially for those who are often underserved. AMM does not just speak about its mission, they show it through acts of kindness, care, and service every single day. I knew it was the right place for me to learn, grow, and contribute. I cannot believe I've spent a whole school year at AMM. It has truly been the most amazing professional detour of my life. I am the therapist I am becoming because of the great supervisors, providers, and staff at AMM. Everyone played a role in shaping my growth, and I will always be grateful for that.
What did you do as part of your internship?
During my internship, I provided bilingual counseling services to patients, addressing a wide range of mental health needs. I collaborated with providers to offer integrated care, participated in case consultations, and developed treatment plans rooted in cultural humility, empowerment, and trauma-informed practices. I worked to create a safe, empathetic space where patients could share their stories, feel heard, and begin their healing journeys with dignity and support.
What have you learned during your internship at AMM?
I have learned the incredible power of community, collaboration, and compassion. Being part of AMM has deepened my understanding of the importance of meeting people where they are, both emotionally and culturally. I have grown not only as a clinician but also as a human being. AMM taught me that healing is possible when people are seen, heard, and supported. I leave with a stronger heart, a clearer purpose, and a deep commitment to always serve with empathy, respect, and authenticity.
What are your plans for the future?
After graduation, I plan to pursue my licensure as a Clinical Mental Health Counselor and continue working as a bilingual therapist. I hope to serve multi-cultural communities. My long-term dream is to continue advocating for mental health awareness and access to quality care for all individuals, especially those who have been historically marginalized. I will carry everything I learned at AMM with me as I continue on this path.
I am so grateful that AMM welcomed me and allowed me to be part of the patients' healing journeys. It has been one of the greatest honors of my life.
