April AMM Pulse: Valuable Volunteers!
April 30, 2025
Dear Friend,

April is Volunteer Month, so we are highlighting our clinical volunteers who are essential to what we do for our patients. We enjoy having the next generation of physicians, counselors, social workers, physician's assistants, and nurses in the clinic supporting our staff and patients. Just in the last few years, our volunteers have gone on to medical school at Johns Hopkins, UNC, East Carolina, and Campbell, as well as the NC State School for Social Work. We are also proud to host several Kenan Urban Scholars each year as well as second- and third-year medical students from UNC.

Their experience working with underserved populations in a primary care setting at AMM provides an invaluable perspective.  Beyond the medical context and the chronic conditions they are exposed to, they develop a deeper understanding and commitment to serving the most vulnerable members of our community. Dr. Burkett, Dr. Thakur, our Director of Pastoral Care and Counseling, Dr. James, and Director of Social Work, Nick Conde-Dudding, are mentoring and teaching this next generation of care providers in ways that go far beyond what can be learned from a textbook.

How can you help? Even beyond the clinic, there are opportunities to volunteer in our garden with Farmer Lauren or work with Celvy to produce flu and health kits for our patients.

Thank you for supporting AMM!

Sincerely,

Pete Tannenbaum,
AMM Executive Director
April 20-26, 2025, was National Volunteer Appreciation Week! AMM relies on volunteers to assist in the garden, build kits for patients, and work part-time in the clinic. Without our volunteers, AMM would not be able to help the thousands of uninsured neighbors in Wake County. A big thank you to everyone who has volunteered at AMM! To celebrate, we are featuring two of our clinic volunteers and hearing from them about their volunteer experience.

I chose AMM because of its mission and heart. I wanted to be in a place where patients are treated with dignity, respect, and true compassion. From the moment I learned about AMM, I could feel the genuine dedication to the community, especially for those who are often underserved. AMM does not just speak about its mission, they show it through acts of kindness, care, and service every single day. I knew it was the right place for me to learn, grow, and contribute.

The AMM Development team joined Highland United Methodist Church to talk about AMM and participate in a massive kit-building event! In total, 352 flu kits were built in under an hour!

A big thank you to Highland UMC for putting on this event and inviting AMM to participate!

What better way to celebrate the intersection of Volunteer Week (4/20-26) and Earth Day (4/22) than to volunteer in a garden! With the warmer weather beginning to creep in, this month was packed with people coming to volunteer in the AMM Garden. AMM had four amazing groups of volunteers help out by planting, watering, and harvesting all the many fruit and vegetable varieties.

Thank you to:

  • Our Lady of Lourdes
  • Hayes Barton United Methodist Church
  • Duke MBS Students
  • Triangle Young Professionals Civitan
for helping out in the garden.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a period devoted to promoting mental health, eradicating stigma, and providing support. Mental health is still stigmatized, misunderstood, and infrequently discussed, despite the fact that so many people are affected. This month is an opportunity to recognize the importance of taking care of ourselves and others, to acknowledge the significance of mental health, and to normalize honest conversations.
